On April 21, 2015, Google announced the launch of the Mega Algorithm Update that rewards the positioning in search results of so-called mobile-friendly sites, that is, sites that are easy to navigate using a smartphone.

To evaluate its effects, we carried out a test on a sample of 10 high-traffic and high-visit sites.

The result?

We observed that mobile-friendly sites have on average recorded a positive increase in both traffic and impressions, while the decrease in desktop-only sites does not yet seem to be as marked as expected.

Below are the details of the analysis carried out

The champion
The test involved a basket of ten canada telegram phone number list and foreign sites with medium and high traffic. Some were mobile friendly, others only desktop.

For these sites, approximately one thousand keywords belonging to the consumer electronics, cosmetics, online comparators, e-commerce and publishing sectors were monitored.

The total mobile impressions in the period considered exceeded 50 million with an organic traffic of approximately 1.7 million visitors.

The period and the digital KPIs monitored
Two intervals of 10 days before and after April 21st were taken into consideration

From Tuesday 7th to Thursday 16th April (pre MobileGeddon)
From Tuesday 21st to Thursday 30th April (post MobileGeddon)
The KPIs that were monitored were as follows:

Impression Mobile (source: Google WebMaster Tools)
Organic Mobile Traffic (Source: Google Analytics)
Mobile Ranking (source: SemRush)
Summary of Results
Mobile-friendly sites have seen an average positive increase in both traffic and impressions.

There is also a trend towards improved rankings for mobile friendly sites, especially in the lower positions.

The clearest data is undoubtedly that of mobile impressions: mobile-friendly sites have recorded an average increase of more than 9%.

For desktop-only sites, the loss of impressions is there but is still limited with peaks of -5%.

Although it is too early to say (Google's crawling and re-indexing work is still ongoing), to date a timid positive effect on mobile-friendly sites can be observed .
