Some of the faults of the built-in microphone are:
Omnidirectional is horrible – Almost all cameras record sound from internal microphones in all directions around the shot. This is especially noticeable in HDSLR cameras. Low quality microphone can distort the audio, resulting in voice sounding unnatural and flat.
These are the main reasons why you should buy a camera that has an external microphone jack. This will still allow you to record both audio and video on the same device. Not only will you have less work to do while recording, you will also eliminate the hassle of syncing later on. Now that you have decided that you need a microphone, how do you know which microphone to buy? There are three basic types of microphones used for recording videos:
Shotgun Microphone – Also called cannon This microphone eliminates all the flaws of the internal microphone. It can be placed very close to the speaker, but still remain out of frame. The sound quality it delivers is excellent, even with mid-range shotgun microphones. The microphone is very directional, which makes you focus on the audio to precisely record the sounds you want, rather than recording everything.
