Audiovisual archives tell us stories about the lives of people and cultures around the world. They represent an invaluable heritage that is an affirmation of our collective memory and a valuable source of knowledge, as they reflect the cultural, social and linguistic diversity of our communities. They help us grow and understand the world we all share. Preserving this heritage and ensuring that it remains accessible to the public and future generations is a vital goal for all memory institutions, as well as the general public.
The main objectives of designating the date of October 27 were listed by UNESCO:
Raise public awareness about the need for preservation;
Provide opportunities to celebrate specific aspects of heritage at local, national or international levels.
