The challenges of the food industry, under discussion at: The Alimentaria Hub

Within the framework of The Alimentaria Hub , Nestlé has organized the 1st Nestlé Forum on Creating Shared Value , which has revolved around The challenges for a sustainable future in the food sector , with the aim of sharing with food industry professionals the challenges, trends and opportunities in the areas of creating shared value and sustainability for the sector in the coming years.
The meeting, which was attended by top representatives of the food and distribution industry, was attended by John Elkington, co-founder of SustainAbility and founding architect data partner and director of Volans; José Mª Ordovás, professor and director of the USDA-HNRCA Nutrition and Genomics Laboratory at Tufts University (USA) and scientific director of IMDEA Food, and senior collaborator at the CNIC; Stuart Orr , Freshwater Programm WWF Manager; Ignasi Carreras , director of the Institute for Social Innovation at ESADE Business School; and Bernard Meunier, general manager of Nestlé Spain.
The speakers addressed issues such as the increased demand for food and water caused by the growth of the world population, the economic and social development of rural communities, and problems related to nutrition, such as obesity or nutritional deficiencies, among others.
Following the experts' intervention, a round table discussion took place, moderated by Arantxa Corella , a journalist specialising in issues related to Corporate Social Responsibility.
Development of the session
The session was opened by John Elkington with “ Creating shared value: a philosophy of responsible management ”. Elkington, with more than thirty years of experience in the field of corporate social responsibility and sustainability, referred to the rise of the concept of shared value among business leaders worldwide and the increase in social pressure on issues of responsibility and sustainability. During his presentation, Elkington defined the key points for responsible business management based on the creation of shared value.

For his part, José Mª Ordovás has focused on the " Challenges and implications of the food sector in nutrition " and has recalled that the world is suffering the effects of the "hurricane of malnutrition", both in terms of obesity and nutritional deficiencies, placing special emphasis on the importance of scientific research as a guide for the food industry, thus connecting food with health.
