His skills are enhanced by his creativity and adaptability. Tyler says one of the reasons he is always looking for new projects is because he has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which he was diagnosed with in 2005.
In an industry built by programmers and developers who often have exceptional attention spans, Tyler felt it would be difficult for someone with ADHD to fit in. However, he found that the WordPress community is a place for everyone to find their voice and their skills. Tyler’s talent is in connecting with people, and this has led to many opportunities and responsibilities in his professional life. His skills have also allowed him to get involved in the WordPress community and contribute as a speaker and volunteer, as well as through numerous Contributor days.
Most of Tyler's experience was in the restaurant industry, and his special lead resume didn't exactly point to a career in tech. But the service industry actually prepared him well for whatever he took on.
When he is at various work events, he meets people from all over the world and builds relationships with them. As an extrovert, he enjoys this and cannot imagine a job where he would be isolated from meeting new people and interacting with others.
Understanding people and being able to work in any environment are his key competencies. Social skills and tact are useful for building a community and have found application in the WordPress space, and in Tyler’s life, they have been essential for survival at various times.
